MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – For the first time in program history, the Waupun softball team won a state championship, defeating Mosinee, 7-2, for the Division 2 title.
After falling in an early 1-0 hole, Addison Braun evened the score in the 4th inning with an RBI double. Kylee Pluim gave the Warriors the lead in the same inning with a sacrifice fly.
Rowan Harder extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the 5th inning. Then, Braun opened the flood gates with a grand slam, making it a 7-1 ball game.
Mosinee managed to score twice in the bottom of the 7th inning, but the lead was too much to overcome.
Waupun has only appeared in the state tournament twice before this year (1985, 2015).
Earlier in the day, Laconia fell in the Division 3 championship game, with Prescott winning, 3-1. Laconia upset previously undefeated Mishicot on Friday to advance to the championship game.
In Division 5, Oakfield fell to Pacelli, 4-3, in their championship game. It was the Oaks 17th appearance at state in program history.
