Kaukauna High School’s football team is heading into the upcoming season with high hopes, returning an experienced team that was able to advance to the WIAA Division 2 state semifinals last season.
According to WFRV, the Galloping Ghosts are returning 29 seniors to the team this year, including four starters on the offensive line. Last season, the team ended the year with a 8-5 record, and were just one game shy of the state tournament before they fell short against West De Pere in the level four of the playoffs.
In an interview with the Post Crescent, Kaukauna player Mitch Verstegen shared his thoughts on the upcoming season saying,
“Last year is in the past, it’s a whole new year, but I definitely think the attitude’s there to make it down to state and I think we can definitely do it. We have a lot of talented kids out here and everyone’s working hard. Offense is pushing defense, defense is pushing offense, and we’re clicking right now. We’re looking really good on the field and I’m excited.”
Another teammate, Karson Ernst also chimed in:
“I think we all feel very lucky in that we’re able to play in this league because it prepares us with the best challenges and the best teams so that when it comes playoff time, we’re ready for the best teams there and we’re ready to go.”
Kaukauna will face Ashwaubenon on their home field for their opening game of the season on August 17.
